Superlatives! Their Rightful Owner
To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.
Jude 1:25 (NKJV)
And every creature which is in Heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: 'Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him Who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!'
Revelation 5:13 (NKJV)
Forever and ever belongs to God. Aways and never belong to God, too. He owns ALL RIGHTS to utmost measurement, and words like… “best”, “worst”, “perfect”, and “supreme.” Because they are matchless superlatives.
Superlative means 'Of the highest order, quality or degree; surpassing or superior to all others' (American Heritage Dictionary).
Surely, only God is SUPERIOR.
Therefore, when we make dramatic statements, like 'I will NEVER do that,' watch out!
Perhaps you’re wise and avoid that big word. But speaking for me (and my foolish mouth)… the things I said I'd NEVER do– I’ve done.
And yet, most of my 'NEVER DO’s' (but did)... happened during my ‘Before Christ’ decades.
Today, I’m more disciplined with my words, as I try to make my big mouth smaller. Praise God for His great patience! He helps me!
Because if we don’t close our mouths, God will. 'Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, they are altogether lighter than vapor' (Psalm 62:9)... as in, all of our boasts are puffs of smoke.
Here’s another definition of superlative: 'Excessive or exaggerated' (American Heritage Dictionary). Regrettably, exaggeration is 'to magnify beyond the limits of truth; overstate; represent disproportionately' (Random House Dictionary)...
Meaning? Exaggeration is a lie, and God hates liars. 'Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord' (Proverbs 12:22).
Insecure people… may magnify words in their attempts to magnify themselves. (I know. I’ve done it.)
But only one Magnifier is true. Exceeding abundance is God’s to give and ours to have– IF we humble ourselves... and empty our mouths of words we don’t own.
'Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it' (Psalm 81:10).

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
