Priorities: God's Business Or Man's Business?

Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit;' whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

James 4:13-14 (NKJV)

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...

Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

The kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come... they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business.

Matthew 22:2-3, 5 (NKJV)

Young Jesus said, 'I must be about My Father's business' (Luke 2:49).

No doubt about it. Christ’s priority still applies today. But it’s hard to resist worldly values–even in the church!

Regarding the church, the Prince of Peace was pointedly angry: ‘Take these things away! Do not make My Father's House a house of merchandise!' (John 2:16).

In today’s Verses, the heavy Words of James, Paul, and Jesus stand as warnings to us--NOT to the world.

Why?

Because the world doesn't profess Jesus.

So?

When Christians look and act like the world does (while preaching Christ’s superiority with ‘Holier than thou’ accusations),

God (and the world) call them hypocrites: false prophets soliciting false profit.*

Actors, models, and talent for Christ: You know and show the right priorities. Yes, you’re in the business of show business, multiplying the talents God gave you, drawing fans like a magnet with your gifts, remembering to give God the glory.

Because in you is the Heart of the King.

Priorities: God’s Business Or Man’s Business (Part 8, Conclusion)

* Matthew 23 is a stinging indictment.

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
