Christian Pitfalls: Comparison

Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men, who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!

2 Corinthians 10:12 (NLT)

In the fickle fields of entertainment…

  • Where bookings can come or go on a whim,

  • Where popularity spins on a dime,

  • Where the timing of “success” can’t be known…

Comparing yourself to others can KILL your hope, faith, dream, progress, and destiny!

Actors, models, and talent for Christ:

ALWAYS avoid comparing yourself with…

  • Fellow students in your acting classes. (Cheer for their wins. Kick envy out the door!)

  • Friends who choose more “guaranteed” career paths. (Courageous people walk paths less taken.)

  • “Overnight” stars on reality shows. (Here’s the truth: they’ve been performing for y-e-a-r-s.*)

Are positive comparisons possible?

Not if jealousy, self-disparagement, and discouragement are the byproducts.

On the other hand…

You’re wise to study what works for others (especially performers in your brand)–so you stay up-to-date with what’s trending… as long as you DON’T copy anyone and DO appreciate your uniqueness!

Because you’re an ambassador for Christ, appointed to a competitive field of extraordinary significance– and God loves to make the longest shot win!

Christian Pitfalls: Comparison (Part 49)

* Shine grads have either won or been close to the top of every positive reality show (involving performance), and they’ve shared how the process really works.

NOTE: God is my Ghostwriter. If what I write is good, it’s from God. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.’ Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
