Christian Pitfalls: Busyness

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:38-42 (NIV)

In my B.C. years, “Carey, Carey” was like “Martha, Martha”... a driven, self-righteous workaholic judging others who didn’t work like me. UGG.

But I’m not alone in this attitude.

Among modern democratic nations, America stands with Earth’s busiest: l-o-n-g hours, more days, and less vacation. Why?

  • To pay the increasing costs of living, like food, gas, housing, healthcare, and children.

  • To purchase overflowing possessions, which often requires jobs on top of jobs.

  • To strut our stuff and play with our gadgets, which often become obsessive habits,

  • Like purchasing the newest, coolest iPhone, with endless choices of entertainment.

Which morphs into ceaseless activity--busily OPPOSED to ceaseless prayer!

The solution? We must pause and hit the reset button. How? Bow down and pray:

  • 'Be still and know that I am God' (Psalm 46:10).

  • Otherwise, we might miss His ‘Still small Voice' (1 Kings 19:12).

Actors, models, and talent for Christ:

Each day in each way--stop, look, and listen! Your Director's guidance is ESSENTIAL. Without it, activities are aimless:

'In vain they rush about, heaping up wealth, without knowing whose it will finally be' (Psalm 39:6).

Don't be a member of the Loveless Church: too busy to pause and spend time with God.*

Christian Pitfalls: Busyness (Part 13)

* 'You have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place' (Revelation 2:4-5).

* The Loveless Church: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation+2%3A1-7&version=NKJV

* ' 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great Commandment. And the Second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets' (Matthew 22:37-40).

NOTE: God is my Ghostwriter. If what I write is good, it’s from God. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.’ Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
