Ambassadors For Christ: Onward Christian Soldiers

We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)*

Onward, Christian Soldiers is an old hymn… written as a children's processional.

  • Since we must 'Become as little children' (Matthew 18:3) to come into the Kingdom of Heaven,

  • Since Satan opposes our every step, this song seems a fitting battle anthem.*

As God’s soldiers, our war isn’t against…

  • Bullies and antagonists who hurt us.

  • An opposing political party.

  • A government we believe is corrupt.

  • Laws, leaders, and policies we don’t like.

  • Different cultures, values, or lifestyles.

We fight Satan’s team: 'Spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places' (Ephesians 6:12). Jesus showed us how, and took Satan down.

However, the occupying forces won’t be making a total withdrawal… until the King leads Earth’s final battle.

Actors, models, and talent for Christ:

Your army job is Public Relations. It was important in Bible days, too– but as 21st-century heralds… You’re an elite wing of fighter pilots, flying in the dark skies of media: 

'For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; But the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you' (Isaiah 60:2).

You’re the glory guys: talented, courageous, spunky, and smart. You smile in the face of danger, like God!

'The Lord laughs at the wicked, for He knows their day is coming' (Psalm 37:13).

But…

Instead of shooting bullets and missiles, you're shooting Good News and missives (letters). What’s more important than letters from God?

  • 'You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone' (2 Corinthians 3:2).

  • For such a time as this, you’re flying high!

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the Cross of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; Forward into battle see his banners go!
