The Fragility Of Life: Our Strength
I can do all things through Him Who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 (ESV)
The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him.
Exodus 15:2 (ESV)
He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
Mark 12:30 (ESV)
At some climactic moment in our lives, we realize we’re utterly helpless. We can’t help ourselves. We can’t lift ourselves. We can’t fix ourselves. We don’t have the strength.
Obviously, we have previews in childhood. But most of us joyfully discover… when we cry out, loving parents answer. For reasons beyond our understanding, they tend to us quickly and tenderly.
As we grow up, we can get uppity. We flex our juvenile muscles and minds, feeling ever-so-strong and capable. Without discipline, we bring self-focus and self-confidence into adulthood. We can move mountains! We feel like giants!
Some of us become bullies or titans. People work for us. They supply our needs. Until they don’t or they won’t.
AND THEN WHAT?
We’re babies again. We cry out to God!
I did exactly that at 51. I realized my utter helplessness. Now I try to remember every day (when troubles threaten to overwhelm me)... my Father’s utter and absolute strength– that Jesus made available to me. To US. Free of charge. We just need to ask!
