Mobile Technology: Enchantment

For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.

Revelation 18:23 (NKJV)

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.

Ephesians 2:1-2 (NKJV)

The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.

Luke 11:34 (NKJV)

Mobile technology is not evil. It’s a cool tool, but tools can be misused. Regarding Satan, our Father warns us… ‘Not to be ignorant of his devices’ (2 Corinthians 2:11).

The device of mobile technology connects us to people and purposes. Our choices of connection are endless. Even enchanting.

To enchant is 'to cast a spell on; bewitch; to delight or captivate utterly' (World English Dictionary). Has a spell been cast through the phones we hold… for seemingly endless amounts of time? Is this thought a ridiculous notion?

Cell phone holders walk, talk, and even drive without seeing the things around them. Their eyes are fixated on a small screen. They’re utterly captivated by it– often to the brink of overlooking the realities of life before them. Some fall blindly off a virtual cliff.

Outcomes include car wrecks, job wrecks, home wrecks, and tragic obsessions.. with looks, likes, games, gossip, violence, and pornography.

Consider Christ’s warning in Luke (above). What does Jesus mean, 'When your eye is bad'? Bible expert, John Gill, put it this way centuries ago:

'When the eye of the body is attended with any bad humours that hinder the sight, all the members of it are in darkness; so, when the understanding is darkened through the blindness and ignorance there is in men, with respect to Gospel truths, all the powers and faculties of the soul are in a very miserable and uncomfortable condition.'

More recently, famed scholar, Derek Prince, adds a darkly, sobering perspective, when we entertain evil on a phone:

'You have crossed an invisible border into the kingdom of Satan. Since that time, whether you know it or not, Satan has regarded you as one of his subjects. He considers he has a legal claim to you' ('Blessings or Curses: You Can Choose,' p.214).

One safeguard? To avoid enchantment, limit usage. Be mindful of what you let your eyes see.

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
