Ten Commandments For Christian Performers: #2, No American Idols

You shall not make for yourself an idol.

Exodus 20:4 (NASB)

As Christians, we love nothing more than God, which is, of course, Commandment #1.

God’s second Commandment warns us against making idols we’re tempted to worship.

When Moses lived, thousands of years ago, people carved images from wood or stone- of animals they believed to be gods. We wouldn't do that!

On the other hand, we DO make movies… and skillfully ‘fashion’ celebrities.

Do we worship them?

“Of course, I don't worship celebrities,” you boldly counter. But… worship is more than songs or prayers.

The dictionary defines it this way: ‘To regard with ardent or adoring esteem or devotion' (Dictionary.com).

  • Do we devotedly watch certain shows?

  • Do we esteem certain celebrities?

  • Do we track them, hoping for autographs?

  • Do we copy what they wear, say and do?

Devotion focuses our attention, including our hearts, hopes, dreams, time, and cash… upon the source of our adoration.

  • Should it be anywhere else than Jesus? NO!

  • Should any person or thing be adored? NO!

Countless millions DO worship media (and its stars) with extravagant passion.

Actors, models, and talent for Christ:

  • Don't love the carefully made images of film, fashion, music, or theatre.

  • At the same time, don’t condemn those who do, since they don’t (YET) know the only true Star!

  • Your job is to “Go Fish” with your talent, “hook” fans with your excellent performance,

  • And draw them into “the boat” with Jesus. How? By your unusual kindness and love.

YES. America makes and sells idols.
YES. God allowed a time such as this.
YES. You’ve been called to rise and shine TODAY.
YES. You’ll give glory and honor to Him!

NOTE: God is my Ghostwriter. If anything I write is on point and agrees with His Word, it’s not from me. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings. This series is a re-write of a prior 2011 series.
