Self-Denial 2023: Performers

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.

Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)

But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:27 (NKJV)

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.

1 Corinthians 10:23 (NKJV)

Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ: Tinsel Town is also Temptation Town. Which angels do you think currently rule the city that has ‘angel’ in its name?

Your job as an ambassador for Christ in Satan’s communication stronghold is an urgent, challenging commission. God has ordained it. Nothing can stop it.

Even so, be diligent, wise and armed.

Don’t be surprised that you’re Satan’s target. He wants you in the dark and off the stage. Or, he’ll attempt to woo you to his side. How? Through self-centeredness and self-indulgence.

So become aware and resist them both.

 Consider these three talent temptations:

  1. Loving glory: If 'The heavens declare the glory of God' (Psalm 19:1), and you’re rising stars in media’s skies, give God the glory. Defer and refer praise, success, honor, awards, and all of your talents to Him.

  2. Getting lazy: 'One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys' (Proverbs 18:9). Don't get out of shape professionally, spiritually or physically. Be disciplined. Take classes. Read the Word. Pray steadily and stay in fellowship.

  3. Acting badly: If you are 'Ambassadors of Christ as though God were pleading through {you}' (2 Corinthians 5:20), be selective about the roles you take. Consider your example and witness. Surely on stage, but especially off.

Never forget the one crown worth winning (and how to get it): 'Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him' (James 1:12).

Self-denial is a ladder to God.

NOTE: This is a 2022 update of a 2012 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors,

Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
