All Things: Are Meant For Edification

Let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.

Romans 14:19 (NKJV)

Let all things be done for edification.

1 Corinthians 14:26 (NKJV)

Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

Romans 15:2 (ESV)

So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

Romans 14:9 (ESV)

Let's review what “edification” means. Definitions include:

  • “The state of being uplifted” (Collins Dictionary).

  • “The improvement of the mind and understanding, especially by learning” (Cambridge Dictionary).

  • “The spiritual growth and development of the character of believers, by teaching, or by example” (Vine’s Expository).

  • “The word used for ‘edification’ in the New Testament is oikodomé, which translates literally as ‘the building of a house’ “(GotQuestions website).

This uplifting “how-to” makes perfect sense! Without a doubt, every Christian needs it.

What doesn't make sense are puffed-up put-downs… from holy rollers, because holier-than-thou attitudes are discouraging (NOT edifying).

Actors, models, and talent for Christ: Consider 4 things:

  1. To belittle brethren (or anyone else) exposes the scoffer as a bully. Christian bullies are insecure people. They need prayer and gentle comeuppance. But they shouldn’t be leaders or teachers, since they lack essential humility.

  2. To understand lost sheep and prodigals… requires face-to-face, heart-to-heart meetings. Jesus spent time with sinners and students. He stepped out to meet them just where they were. Kindness and love are doors people enter.

  3. To edify means “to lift or support,” so look for what’s good and encourage it. If you see something wrong, gently reprove. HINT: If you share your own shortcomings first, you’ve disarmed all shows of condescension and opened a path of understanding.

  4. To criticize outsiders lacks wisdom, kindness, compassion, and understanding– because without Christ, the world has been their guide. It surely was for “before-Christ” Carey. If you show them love without haughtiness, they may seek the King you follow. I did.

NOTE: God is my Ghostwriter. If what I write is good, it’s from God. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.’ Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
