The Straight Up Word: The Wordbucks Cafe

There were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you... And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the Way of Truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you.

2 Peter 2:1-3 (KJV)

There were also lying prophets among the people then, just as there will be lying religious teachers among you. They'll smuggle in destructive divisions, pitting you against each other--biting the hand of the One Who gave them a chance to have their lives back! They've put themselves on a fast downhill slide to destruction, but not before they recruit a crowd of mixed-up followers who can't tell right from wrong.

They give the Way of Truth a bad name. They're only out for themselves. They'll say anything, anything, that sounds good to exploit you.

Same Verses, 2 Peter 2:1-3 (The Message)

Here’s a scene I’d like you to imagine. You’re stepping into a WORDBUCKS CAFE. It’s a popular hangout for Christians. Rejuvenation is always needed.

A smiling Word-ista asks your order: “What can I get you?”

You’re feeling uncertain, so you answer, “I'm not really sure.”

The Word-ista smiles again, then offers, “Do you like your Word whipped with vanilla? Or frothed into a caramel latte?” “Since it's December, we’re featuring Christmas Word specials, like gingerbread and peppermint spice.”

Finally, you say… “'I'll keep it simple today--just 1 cream and 2 sugars in my Word.”

Let’s get back to the theme of this series: The Straight Up Word. Many pastors preach sweetened messages, because many Christians like it that way.

Why?

Some of Christ’s teachings are hard to swallow. They’re a ‘jolt’ to business as usual.

Also…

Countless Christian authors write countless books, interpreting God’s Word as each sees fit.

So?

As they vie for our thoughts (and our dollars), we’re left with less time to dwell in The Word.

One more thing:

Daily Devotions aren’t substitutions for your DIRECT CONTACT with the Bible.

Therefore…

I propose a simple counter-offer (pun on the word, “counter”, IS intended:)

Your best daily Refreshment is Jesus. He invigorates and supercharges with unmatchable strength. But only if you get the STRAIGHT-UP WORD.

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
