Impossible Healings: Demons & Disease ***Warning: Parental Discretion Advised***

Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.

Matthew 12:22 (NKJV)

Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.

Luke 9:1 (NKJV)

And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, 'Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.'

Luke 13:11-12 (NKJV)

Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow...

Luke 13:32 (NKJV)

For me to remind good Christian parents to protect their children seems ludicrous. Certainly, they do!

For me to forewarn good Christian parents this devotion discusses demons (which might not be what you want them to read) is possibly even more ludicrous.

Why?

Media mainlines demonology into culture– especially our kids.

  • Demons are “darlings” on their pajamas.

  • Demons are “misunderstood champions.”

  • Demons are “beautiful” and “exciting”.

On the other Hand, pointedly- the Lord’s, casting out demons and curing disease are linked in the ministry of Jesus.

As you know, modern medicine ignores this spiritual-to-physical link. In outsiders, it’s understandable.

Many modern Christians ignore it, too. But to me, that's NOT understandable.

Why?

That means they’re ignoring (not copying) the life of Jesus. Nevertheless, I get their reticence.

Why?

The casting out process can be ugly. We might get our Sunday dresses dirty.

'Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child. And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him' (Luke 9:38-39).

It's easier to pray from a distance.

In Luke 13, the in-temple account of the awfully afflicted woman (who had been 'bent over' for 18 years) illustrates two truths:

  1. Even the spiritually faithful can become physically disabled– with demons as the principal culprits.

  2. The Word of Jesus freed her and healed her. Christians today should copy their Leader, and not pretend that demons don’t exist.

'They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover' (Mark 16:18).

Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
