Field Of Dreams: Delay– Misdirected Awe

As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, ‘Stand up; I myself am also a man.’

Acts 10:25-26 (NKJV)

In the Promised Land, idols were worshipped, because evil leaders said they were gods. They demanded glory on pain of death.

When Jesus came, people tried to crown Him, because they thought the Christ would defeat Rome, but He refused that role and glorified God.

When He left, His apostles were worshipped, because of the amazing things they did. They deferred the glory and skipped its perks.

In our time, celebrities are worshipped, because of their fame and accomplishments. Most bask in the glory and keep the perks.

Actors, models, and talent for Christ: Consider some lessons regarding awe.

Why?

Certainly, fans will be awestruck by YOU, and you may feel awe for Hollywood stars. So how should you handle awe and its perks?

  • Only God can carry the weight of awe. Without Him, bearers WILL break from the load.

  • Only God deserves reverential awe. He owns awe and the perks that come with it.

  • NEVER be in awe of celebrity. Never ask a star for an autograph.

  • NEVER be in awe of agents, either. VIPs deserve respect, but not awe.

  • Since it’s not pleasing to God (or to stars), treat every person equally, because…

  • ‘There is no partiality with God’ (Romans 2:11). No one is above you– or beneath you!

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
