Busyness: Right Worker, Wrong Work
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' Feet and heard His Word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.'
And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.'
Luke 10:38-42 (NKJV)
In my B.C. years, I was like Martha: trying to do good, but obsessed with work. Stress was my refrain. I criticized others who didn't do what I perceived was their fair share of work.
'If Satan can't make you bad, he'll make you busy' (Adrian Rogers).
I followed my super-busy mother in talent scouting and development. On the other hand, my dad was laid back, and he loved football. I loved him, so I learned to love it, too.
Actors, models, and talent for Christ: Consider your calling a football game:
It's the 4th quarter, and your team is down. You've got the ball, and the crowd is crazy. The pressure is on, and you’re distracted.
Your Quarterback leads a talented team. But with the noise, you can hardly hear Him. The first attempts to score don't succeed. The Coach calls a timeout to refocus.
You listen eagerly, and play begins. On fourth and ten, your Quarterback goes long. His receiver connects and runs the field. The team follows--blocking every attack, and the game is won!
Martha connected and won her game, too. What about 21st-century Earth?
Are we down 6 in the final quarter?
Are we connecting with our Quarterback (a.k.a. Jesus)…
Or are we distracted by all the noise?
Even though we know God wins Earth’s Superbowl, would we score more goals (a.k.a. souls) if the devil’s team was clearly outclassed?
Here’s the thing: When we get distracted with busyness and forget the plays our Captain directs, we not only lose ground, we lose witness.
Actors, models, and talent for Christ: You’re on the right team and in the right field. ‘Run in such a way to win the prize’ (1 Corinthians 9:24).

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
