Busyness: Be Still
Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
Psalm 23:2 (NKJV)
And Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today.'
Exodus 14:13 (NKJV)
Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22 (NKJV)
And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.
Luke 24:49 (NASB)
Some of us run around physically. We’ve got places to go and things to do. LOTS more of us run around mentally. WORK, WANTS, and WORRIES occupy our minds.
But now we’re in the age of media. Sights and sounds move us emotionally. One sad result? We’re ceaselessly busy, which often prevents unceasing prayer.
Our God connection gets interrupted, and our activities become useless.
'Apart from Me, you can do nothing' (John 15:5).
God says we must be still to hear His Voice.
‘Moses said to them, 'Stand still, that I may hear what the Lord will command, concerning you' ' (Numbers 9:8).
Few people talked with God more than Moses. If he needed to hit the pause button to receive God's direction, don't we all?
What about our important 'To Do' lists? I agree 'It is good to be zealous in a good thing always' (Galatians 4:18). Of himself, Paul said, 'I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me' (1 Corinthians 15:10).
When God said GO, Paul went. When God said STOP, Paul stayed. But consider his BUSY past:
As a Pharisee chasing new Christians, he learned God wasn’t in his busyness.
On the heralded road to Damascus, 'He fell to the ground' (Acts 9:4) and he met Jesus.
Blinded by His Light, all Paul’s movement stopped: 'He was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank' (v.9).
In stillness, 'He received his sight... arose and was baptized' (v.18). Paul's work became glorious history. His busyness was surely Spirit-led.
Actors, models, and talent for Christ: resist the temptation of constant motion. As Jesus went into the wilderness and prayed directly to God, so must you!
You must have the right degree of stillness… to understand the right degree of motion…
And MOVE FORWARD WITH GODLY ASSURANCE!
Busyness: Be Still (Part 8)
NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
