God’s Diplomats: Conduct Code (Self-Control)
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
Proverbs 25:28 (ESV)
God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
1 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)
I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
1 Corinthians 9:29 (ESV)
The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
1 Peter 4:7 (ESV)
Of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit, self-control is the final one listed. Is it because it’s the hardest to grow? The slowest to grow? The quickest to wilt? Does it beg for our hourly attention?
Sometimes, YES! It does! Especially when temptations rise, like:
Junk food, although we know it weakens us.
Wealth, although God compares it to a trap.
Fame, although applause can’t validate us.
Hookups, although lust is clearly harmful.
People-pleasing, although it depletes us.
Working too much, although God says to rest.
Quitting, although God says to persevere.
Consider 2 things WE NEED TO REMEMBER:
Temptations are like captivating weeds. They look lovely. Their smell is inviting. But they’re thorned like bards that stick in our skin. They’re almost impossible to remove. Pretty soon, they take over our gardens, and our other eight fruits begin to die.
Temptations are like a sweet-talking snake. It shows us things we want to hear or have. The captivating items seem so real: riches, status, and sensuality. They give momentary thrills and pleasures… quickly followed by profound emptiness.
Here’s my big concern: Worldly performers practice self-control, because they know they need it to succeed. Among them are major celebrities, with tons of fans who want to copy them (for better or worse.)
Actors, models, and talent for Christ: As examples of the BIGGEST STAR, you’re called to stand in some prime-time spots, too. (But without self-control, you can’t get there!)
When necessary (because it will be), recommit to practicing self-control. He Himself WILL PERFECT what you practice.
